The replacement drive was a seagate 160GB 7200 rpm which is far quieter - in fact noiseless, even when doing an A-B erase. Plus, the firmware updates. One option simply lets you check the HDD ID and is of little importance to a new HDD installation.

The part number posted earlier by "BRON" is the Sony part number; The disk is actually an off-the-shelf Western Digital Caviar SE family drive, P/N WD1600JB[i]. Once again, let me know how it goes. I beleive the newer model which are basically rebadged Pioneer units can have a larger drive installed. This took some time to figure out! I believe the data is still intact.
I agree. $119 sounds very reasonable and well worth it. I came across this thread about 2-3 months ago, and printed out the posts above that gave the most info on changing the HDD if it should go bad.
