Having read all the previous messages on this page, I tried (what I also would never normally do) just moving the two reels that wind the tape - just around 90· C:32:11 I also considered just flooding it with alcohol, then letting it dry. Thank You!!! Debbie rocks...

I tried most everything and I was really happy to find this page because after a few good slaps it started working again. But after precise and soft insertion of the tape as near as possible to the back wall of the compartment it began to work ok. I let it repair NOT at SONY or at the shop where a purchaised the camera. This is done by removing the battery or ac power, wait 10 seconds, reapply the battery or ac power and try again.
IT WORKED THEN EVERYNOW AND THEN I NEED TO SMACK IT AGAIN. You do not have to dismantel the unit to get to this you can do this from the ejection port. Paid $100 bucks to get it fixed when I got home.
