The new HDD is WD3200BPVT SATA 3GB/s (advanced format drive) and being installed in a laptop originally came with WD3200BEVS SATA 3GB/s. The hard drive crashed so I bought a 1TB sata and kept getting the error. Please make sure your drive is a 512 sector drive and not a 4k sector drive. You might not get all the software that the VAIO has in the first place, but believe me you don't need all of it and you can find good open source The OEM recovery discs will not work properly with a 4k sector drive hard drive. So I've decided to move to plan two and do a fresh Vista install on the new drive, then transfer files off the original OEM drive, wipe the old drive, and It is possible the recovery disk is BIOS linked if you did not purchase it from Sony TS.
