Apparently Error 333 is not described on the Sony support website and people say that Sony Support are no help and just say to send in the laptop to them. Can anybody help me diagnose the problem? it will load vaio recovery center. I called sony support and they told me that me hard drive was defective and needed to be replaced.

You said that you can install a copy of Windows to stop getting the error, can you explain how? You might ask them to image the drive prior to performing a recovery. It was unable to read the disk. Look for anything related to sony-especially the sony care and deselect it.
